## How to calculate ROAS

Return on ad spend is the revenue your ads generated divided by what you spent on them.

ROAS = revenue from ads ÷ ad spend

The answer is a multiple. A ROAS of 4× means every $1 in ads brought back $4 in revenue. Some teams write the same thing as 400%.

### Worked example

A Shopify brand spends **$5,000** on Meta ads in a month, and those ads drive **$20,000** in orders.

ROAS = $20,000 ÷ $5,000 = 4.0×

That leaves $15,000 after ad spend, but that's not profit. Product costs, shipping and payment fees still come out of it. Whether 4× is good depends on the margin left after those costs, which is what the [break-even ROAS calculator](/tools/break-even-roas-calculator) works out.

### Getting the inputs right

- **Use the same period for both numbers.** Spend from March against revenue from March.
- **Count revenue net of refunds.** Returned orders inflate ROAS for the campaigns that drive them.
- **Don't add up each platform's reported revenue.** Meta and Google overlap, so the total overstates what you sold.

With Ordinary

## ROAS from your real orders, not the ad platform's claim.

The revenue figure is the hard part of ROAS. Meta and Google each report the sales they think they caused, and they routinely claim the same order.

Ordinary pulls your spend from Meta and Google Ads and joins it to the Shopify orders those ads actually drove, net of refunds, so ROAS reflects revenue your store kept. Switch between four attribution models on the same orders to see how much the credit rules change the answer.

## Frequently asked questions

### What is a good ROAS?

There is no universal number. A good ROAS is one above your break-even ROAS, which depends on your margin. A store keeping 60% of each order after costs breaks even at about 1.7×; a store keeping 25% needs 4×. Work out your own break-even before judging any campaign.

### Is ROAS the same as ROI?

No. ROAS compares revenue to ad spend only. ROI compares profit to the total investment, so it subtracts product, shipping and other costs. A campaign can show a healthy ROAS and a negative ROI when it sells low-margin products.

### Should ROAS include refunds?

It should. Revenue that is later refunded was never really earned, so ROAS on gross sales flatters campaigns that drive returns. Use revenue net of refunds where you can.

### Why does my ROAS differ between Meta, Google and Shopify?

Each ad platform counts the sales it believes it caused, using its own attribution window, and both often claim the same order. Shopify only sees the order. Adding the platforms' reported revenue together usually comes to more than your store actually sold.

### How do I express ROAS as a percentage?

Multiply the ratio by 100. A ROAS of 4× is 400%: every $1 of ad spend brought back $4 in revenue.
