All comparisonsHotjar shows you what shoppers did. Ordinary shows you what it cost.
Session recordings that know which visits became orders and which channel sent them — with the A/B test to fix what they show, in one Shopify app.
Hotjar is now Contentsquare
Being moved anyway? Move to a tool built for your store.
Hotjar has merged into Contentsquare: new Hotjar accounts can't be created and hotjar.com now redirects there. If your account is being migrated, it's the moment to ask whether a general-purpose behaviour tool is still the right fit for a Shopify store. The details below describe Contentsquare's current plans, since that's what a new Hotjar signup gets today.
At a glance
The five questions that decide it.
Both tools record sessions. What matters for a store is whether the recording is connected to the money: the order, the channel, and the test that fixes the problem.
| Question | Ordinary | Hotjar (Contentsquare) |
|---|---|---|
| Does a recording know whether the visit became an order? | Yes — sessions link to their Shopify orders, and orders to the visit behind them. | Revenue attribution only on custom-priced Pro and Enterprise. |
| Can you see which channel sent the shopper? | Yes — channel revenue on every plan, multi-touch from Starter. | Marketing attribution on Pro and Enterprise. |
| Can you test the fix in the same tool? | Yes — native A/B tests scored on real orders, one on Free. | Pro add-on or Enterprise, or connect a separate testing tool. |
| Is it built for Shopify? | Only Shopify. Installs as an app, no theme code to paste. | A general-purpose tool for any website. |
| Does revenue match Shopify? | To the cent, net of refunds the way Shopify counts them. | Not stated. |

Why stores choose Ordinary
Hotjar records your website. Ordinary improves your store.
A general behaviour tool sees clicks and pages. Ordinary is already holding your Shopify orders and your reconciled revenue, so friction on the page your paid traffic lands on is ranked as a different problem from friction on a page nobody visits — and the fix gets tested on the orders it produces.
-
Ranked findings, not a pile.
Sessions are read for rage clicks, dead clicks and recurring friction. You get a short list of problems, each linked to the recordings that show it — no sampling at random.
-
Recordings meet orders.
From an order, jump to the recorded visit that produced it. From a converted recording, jump to its order. On every plan that records, not just a custom-priced tier.
-
Then test the fix.
Run the change as an A/B test scored on real revenue, and see which channel the problem was costing. No second tool.

The verdict
For a Shopify store, recordings should come with revenue.
If you run on Shopify, a recording tool that doesn't know which visits made money leaves the hard part to you. Ordinary connects every session to its order and channel, ranks what's costing you sales, and tests the fix — in one app, on one set of numbers.
Choose Hotjar (Contentsquare) if:
- Your site isn't a Shopify store.
- Heatmaps and on-site surveys are the main job, not revenue.
- You only want to watch recordings, and the lowest price is the deciding factor.
Frequently asked
What happened to Hotjar?
Hotjar has merged into Contentsquare. As of October 2026, hotjar.com redirects to Contentsquare, new Hotjar accounts can't be created, and new users sign up for Contentsquare instead. Existing Hotjar users log in with the same credentials.
Why use Ordinary instead of Hotjar for a Shopify store?
Because a recording is only useful when you know what the visit was worth. Ordinary already holds your Shopify orders, your channels and your reconciled revenue, so each session is a shopper who came from a specific campaign and either bought or didn't. You can see which channel a problem is costing and A/B test the fix in the same app — no second tool, no second pixel.
When is Hotjar (Contentsquare) the better choice?
When your site isn't a Shopify store, or when heatmaps and on-site surveys are the main job. Ordinary doesn't make heatmaps or run surveys.
Isn't Hotjar cheaper?
For recordings alone, yes — Contentsquare's Growth plan starts at $39/mo. But attribution, revenue-linked recordings and A/B testing sit on its custom-priced Pro and Enterprise plans or in separate tools. Ordinary's Advanced plan, from $149/mo, includes recordings, multi-touch attribution, profit reporting and unlimited A/B tests.
Is Ordinary's session recording free?
Session recordings are on the Advanced plan, from $149/mo for stores under $250K in revenue. Stores on the Free plan can try Advanced free for 30 days, once, with no charge. Free itself includes attribution and one A/B test.
Do I need to add tracking code to my theme?
No. Ordinary installs from the Shopify App Store and records through its Shopify app embed, which you switch on in your theme editor — there's no snippet to paste into your theme code.
Recordings that know what the visit was worth.
Install Ordinary from the Shopify App Store. Stores on Free can try Advanced, recordings included, free for 30 days.
